Revolutionizing iOS Payments: Vipps Takes the Stage

Vipps Becomes the First Norwegian Payments App to Access Apple’s NFC Chip

In a groundbreaking move, Vipps, a Norwegian payments app, has become the first to gain access to the NFC chip on Apple devices, positioning itself as a strong alternative to Apple Pay. The app is now available to users in Norway, enabling both online payments and contactless transactions at NFC-enabled terminals. iPhone users can also set Vipps as their default payment option, a significant milestone for third-party payment services.

This development follows a landmark decision by the European Commission, which deemed Apple's exclusive control over its NFC chips anti-competitive, forcing the tech giant to open access to third-party providers.

Vipps offers a wide array of payment options, including in-store and online transactions, money transfers to friends or organizations, and even crowdfunding for private purposes. The service currently supports SpareBank 1, DNB, and over 40 additional Norwegian banks.

To further solidify its reach, Vipps is compatible with BankAxept cards, which are accepted by more than 90% of payment terminals in Norway. The app plans to introduce support for Mastercard and Visa in the coming months and expand its tap-to-pay functionality to Denmark, Finland, and Sweden next year.

With its innovative features and strategic partnerships, Vipps is poised to transform the digital payments landscape in Norway and beyond.
