BSNL 5G upgrade is set to transform India’s telecom landscape as the state-run operator announces plans to upgrade all 92,500 existing 4G towers to 5G within six to eight months, Union Minister for Telecommunications Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed at the Kautilya Economic Conclave.
The towers, launched on September 27, were built using indigenous hardware and software stacks, showcasing India’s capability to develop a homegrown core network and radio access network (RAN) within just 22 months. Scindia highlighted that BSNL has achieved an operating profit of Rs 5,000 crore, nearly doubling its previous year’s profit, while subscribers increased to 9.1 crore, serving over 22 million people nationwide.
This ambitious initiative positions BSNL to compete effectively in the 5G era, reinforcing India’s vision of a self-reliant and technologically advanced telecom sector.
With the BSNL 5G upgrade on the horizon, India’s public telecom sector is poised to deliver faster connectivity, improved network resilience, and enhanced digital services to millions of users across the country.
