Nationwide Internet and Telecom Blackout Hits Afghanistan

Nationwide Internet and Telecom Blackout Hits Afghanistan

Afghanistan is experiencing a major telecommunications blackout, as the interim authorities cut off the country’s fibre optic network, leaving millions without internet and mobile phone access.

According to internet watchdog NetBlocks, connectivity nationwide dropped to less than one percent of normal levels on Monday night, and on Tuesday, the country continued to face almost complete communication isolation.

How the Blackout is Impacting Afghanistan

  • ???? Mobile and Internet Services Disrupted: Mobile phone signals and internet services are severely limited, affecting both private citizens and international news agencies.

  • ✈️ Air Travel Affected: Reports indicate that at least eight flights from Kabul airport were canceled due to communication issues.

  • ???? Economic and Social Impact: Experts warn that the shutdown will disrupt banking, business, education, and healthcare services, severely affecting daily life.

  • ????️ Uncertain Duration: Communications officials stated that the blackout could continue indefinitely, with no clear timeline for restoration.

The interim authorities had previously justified internet restrictions as a measure to “prevent vice” and indicated that alternative communication routes might be implemented if needed.

This blackout highlights the growing risks of nationwide digital shutdowns, especially in countries reliant on centralized telecommunications infrastructure. For residents and businesses in Afghanistan, the ongoing internet cut represents a major challenge to communication, commerce, and access to vital services.
