ChatGPT Can Now Replace Gemini as the Default Assistant on Android
With the latest beta update of the ChatGPT app for Android, OpenAI’s chatbot can now be set as your default digital assistant, replacing Google’s Gemini.
Once enabled, you can activate ChatGPT by long-pressing the home button (if using the three-button navigation bar) or swiping up from either bottom corner (if using gesture navigation). Additionally, if your device supports it, long-pressing the power button can also launch the assistant.
When summoned through these methods, ChatGPT will automatically open in voice mode. However, unlike Gemini, it does not support activation via a hotword (such as "Hey Google") due to restricted access to certain privileged APIs, which are only available to preinstalled system apps.
While the feature is currently limited to the beta version of the ChatGPT app, it is expected to roll out more widely in the future. If you're not a beta user, you may need to wait a bit longer before making ChatGPT your default assistant on Android.
