Social Media Platforms Ban In Nepal
Govt to Shut Down 26 Social Media Platforms Including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube in Nepal
The Government of Nepal has decided to shut down 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter (X), and YouTube.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced the move on Thursday, following a directive from the Cabinet and a recent order by the Supreme Court.
According to officials, the government has already instructed the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to enforce the ban starting today.
A source from the ministry revealed that a meeting held on Thursday resolved to close down 26 major social media platforms to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling and the previous Cabinet decision.
The source further stated that these platforms could be gradually reopened if they proceed with the official registration process in Nepal.
On Wednesday, a division bench of Justices Tek Prasad Dhungana and Shanti Singh Thapa ordered that foreign broadcasting agencies must obtain licenses to operate in Nepal. The court also directed the government to formulate the necessary legal framework to regulate foreign social media platforms.
This decision is expected to have a significant impact on millions of users in Nepal who rely on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for communication, entertainment, and business activities.
